A Facebook Friend Received a Cricut Here’s My Advice
A few days ago I received a friend request from Shelia. Great gal who recently received a Cricut from here daughter. What a great gift. I am guessing Shelia has a wonderful daughter.
Shelia tells me she is just getting started with her Cricut. She is about 2 1/2 hours from the major craft stores so I thought I would put together a quick Getting Started post to help Shelia become a paper craft addict like the rest of us.
Here is my top advice for people who own a Cricut or another Electronic Cutting Machine.
1. Mats. Don’t panic when the mats stop holding your paper. You can wash them in soapy water. Dry them and you will find yourself with sticky mats again. If you are beyond washing them get spray adhesive and respray your mats. I have a collection of mats but don’t buy new ones because someone shared these tips with me early on.
2. Where to shop. If you are limited by your location shop online. I don’ live close to a couple of smaller chain stores but I find keep my addiction alive a whole lot easier if they mail man drops off my supplies. My favorite online places are as follows:
3. Cartridges. No doubt the the cartridges made for the Cricut are amazing. I currently have limited storage space and really like to design my own stuff. Instead of using cartridges I use Sure Cuts a Lot software. With this software I can design my own stuff, download from free sites and share my work with others. This was my first purchase when I bought my Cricut. I actually researched the software before I bought the machine.
4. Shelia also mentioned she was interested in blogging. Blogging and getting started in blogging in a different website project altogether. If anyone is interested in learning how to get started with blogging drop a comment and I will point you in the right direction. If you want to share your work with out maintaining a blog use pre-made galleries like those available with your free membership at Scrapbook.com. You can also share your work in Yahoo Groups and Forums.
5. Sometimes all the embellishments, paper choices and techniques can be overwhelming and you don’t know where to turn. I like Yahoo Groups. I have met a bunch of awesome paper crafters who are quick to answer questions, share stories and become your friends. My favorite group is the Sure Cuts a Lot & Make the Cut Yahoo Group.
6. If you need inspiration I go to the challenges. A good layout or a terrific idea can be all you need to take a card or page from humdrum to magnificent. Sometimes prizes are involved but most of all it is fun to see people with the same concept create a project a thousand different ways. I like the Splitcoast Challenges.
7. Join the conversation. No matter where you live if you can access the Internet you can be a part of the paper crafting conversation. By commenting on blog posts and following people and pages on Facebook I feel like am part of group and can always find a friend or a little inspiration. I follow the following pages on Facebook to stay up to date.
- Scrapbook Steals
- Splitcoast Stampers
- Paper Crafts by Candace
- Paper Crafts Magazine
- Creating Keepsakes Magazine
Shelia I hope this blog post helps you and the other visitors here out a little. I hope you will find a inspiration and meet people who have the same interest. Sharing and creating together is a lot more fun than keeping your paper crafting addition to yourself.
If you have blogs, shopping opportunites or places to share your stuff please put the links in the comments. Let’s make this a great resource for people just getting started with their Cricut.
All the Best

Cat’s Meow Card
You’re the cats meow. This is a fun little card that could be made for several occasions. You could also take the file and turn it into an awesome scrapbook page. The cat and the title are in svg, scal and mtc format so you can either print these and cut them or use your software and an electronic die cut machine.
The card was created with Die Cuts with a View Rustic Paper Stack. I used
Pebbles I kan’dee Chalks – Shimmer. I highlighted the edges of the cream color paper with the shimmer to match the glitter in the DCWV paper. The ribbon came from my stash. The files for this card are available to all FREE members.

I just came across this the other day and wanted to share it with the Sure Cuts A Lot users. I downloaded the latest version of SCAL. I noticed that it now saves scal files as scut2. If you have the 2nd version of Sure Cuts a Lot be sure to get the update so that you can use the Scut2 files correctly.
Hope this helps a few of you who have sent me questions about the scut2 file extension.
Get Well Soon Giraffe for Sure Cuts a Lot
Our friend was feeling under the weather for a quite a while. We did a little reconnaissance and found out that sheliked popcorn and giraffes. This little fellow was created using sure cuts a lot. The scut and the SVG file is available below. The letters were created with a Close to My Hear stamp set, doodletype. The cloud and the rain were accented with Glossy Accents. The giraffe was given a coating of Doodlebug Design Sugar Coating.
I added an eyelet to each side of the page. I added fiber through the eyelet to tie the card shut. The card has been made big enough so that a package of microwave popcorn fits snuggly inside.
We added “Hope you pop back soon,” in the card.
Happy Birthday Crocus Card
I love flowers. If I am not good at growing them I certainly know I can pull out inkscape and create one for my beloved cricut using sure cuts a lot.
Today I have create a happy birthday card with crocus. Stickles have been added. This will continue to happen until my supply starts to dwindle.
Enjoy the Crocus. The file will include the svg files as well as a Scal Library.
Bride and Groom for Your Cricut

Bride and Groom SVG
I am on a wedding kick lately the brother and the nephew are inspiring me to create some svg files to use with sure cuts a lot. I have a series of wedding and wedding shower related svgs in the works. This is the Bride and Groom. You may want to take a look at the wedding bells as well.
This couple has several different pieces. After putting this together the first time I can see some opportunities to make it stand out. I would add some dimension with 3 d adhesives. I did embellish the dress the tux and the flowers with Stickles. Stickles come in a variety of colors so you could easily match this die cut to the wedding party colors using stickles as an accent.
Scrapbooking your wedding and wedding photos is so important. I have a traditional wedding album that the photographer put together but it doesn’t include any journaling or information about the day. When I got married I was not into scrapbooking. I didn’t journal the day and now a lot has been lost. I have bits and pieces like all of us do. It would have been nice to have a book with journaling as well.
Products like the Janet Hopkin’s Memory Binder would be great for any bride or a sentimental groom for the wedding day. The binder is beautiful on its own. If you are a scrapper and I know you are you can also adorn this with embellishments and really make it your own. This would be an excellent shower gift for a new bride.
The Bride and Groom SVG is available in our free password protected members area. You can get the password for free by joining our site. Select the option on the left. You will receive a confirmation email. Please confirm your subscription. In the 2nd email you will receive a password to access these SVG files. I will be making certain SVG files available to my members only.
